Exploring Lampang, Khun Tan and Lamphun

DESTINATION: Lampang and Lamphun
DATE OF TRIP:
15-18 December 2022

For this trip, I will be taking Express No. 51 as far as Khun Tan station which is between Lampang and Lamphun. And then a local train to the nearby Tha Chomphu Station. I will stay the night here next to the White Bridge. The next day I will travel up and down this line on local trains No. 407/408. Then home on Express No. 52 sleeper train. The purpose of the trip is to document the stations and to identify highlights that can be seen from the trains. I will be taking the No.51 again the following weekend to hike in Doi Khun Tan National Park.

BANGKOK TO CHIANG MAI (NO.51)

This is a three night, two day survey trip to Northern Thailand.

NIGHT 1: Sleeper Express No. 51 from Bangkok to Khun Tan (10:00pm-11:00am)
DAY 1: Local No. 407 from Khun Tan to Tha Chomphu (1:30pm-1:42pm)
NIGHT 2: Hotel/tent in Tha Chomphu

On Day 1, after passing the Yom River in Kaeng Luang (on the right in Section B), over the three bridges and through the longest tunnel (Section C), I will get off at Khun Tan. I will have two and a half hours here. Time enough to explore and eat brunch. I need to confirm if there is a songtaew to Tha Chomphu from here. I will then take the local train one stop north to Tha Chomphu. Highlight here is the White Bridge. I will stay the night at White Bridge Camping. It is about a 15 minute walk from the station to the bridge.

DAY 2 – TRAIN A: Local No. 408 south from Tha Chomphu to Nakhon Lampang (10:43am-11:59am)
DAY 2 – TRAIN B: Local No. 407 north from Nakhon Lampang-Lamphun (12:36pm-2:15pm)
NIGHT 3 – TRAIN C: Sleeper Express No. 52 from Lamphun to Bangkok (3:48pm-5:25am)

On Day 2, I will take a local train south to Lampang where I have about half an hour. Probably not enough time to see the Black Bridge and check on the steam locomotive that was moved here from Bangkok. As time is very limited, I will come back another time and spend the night in Lampang so I can explore a bit more. I will then catch the local train back up the line and this time get off in Lamphun.  As well as visiting these two stations, I will pass the beautiful scenery in Section C twice in a 3rd Class train with the windows open. In Lamphun I have about an hour and a half before the sleeper train arrives to take me back to Bangkok. That’s enough time to see a couple of local attractions in Lamphum. I will then catch the night train back to Bangkok.

DAY 3: Arrive in Bangkok early in the morning.
