Rapid No. 167: Bangkok to Kantang
This is Rapid No. 167 that runs between Bangkok and Trang Province in southern Thailand. It leaves Krung Thep Aphiwat Station at 8:30 p.m. and arrives at Kantang Station in Trang Province at 10:15 a.m. Total travel time is 13 hours and 45 minutes. This is a good train to go to Surat Thani which is the jumping off point for the islands of Koh Samui, Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Tao. This train has 2nd and 3rd Class carriages with seating and fans as well as 2nd Class sleeper carriages with a choice between air-conditioning and fans.
The top photos are the Day and Nigh Sleeper carriages. The top left has air-conditioning and the top right is fan and open windows. I personally like waking up in the morning with the window open and watching the sun rise above the horizon. The bottom two photos are the 2nd and 3rd Class carriages with seating. Neither have air-conditioning and the windows are open.

PASSENGER REVIEWS:
Helen Statham: We went down to Surat Thani in February 2024 on the No. 167, left at 20.30, arrived around 7 am in time for breakfast before the ferry to Koh Samui. Sleepers in 2nd class are fine (though I do always grab the lower one). I couldn’t ever get onto D-ticket from the UK (nor with a Thai sim when there!) so I used 12Go who were great but did insist on paper tickets. They delivered to our hotel in Bangkok so we didn’t have to collect. Later in the trip we used Baolau who sent e-tickets, again it was very straightforward.
