  • Hi, can we view Tham Krasae Bridge without taking the train? If by foot, which station to start & to the next station to view this bridge & how long is the walk?

  • Hi Richard, this site and information is great.
We arrive in BKK early am from LHR, so will take a Taxi to hotel in Kanchanaburi.
    Questions are:
We want to take a train from Kanchanburi to Nam Tok, I see you give advice on waterfall close to Nam Tok, we will the want to go to Hellfire Pass, how long should we allow ? We would like to get the train back, but if Hellfire is interesting, will we be able to get a taxi or bus back to Kanchaaburi ?
Lastly, our return to Bangkok, should we board at River Kwai or Kanchanaburi station, we will be aiming to get the 7am train (give or take) ?

  • Hi Richard
I am planning to take the Death Railway next month. I will be getting off at Saphan Tham Krasae station instead of going to Nong Khai station.
I see from the Thai Railways timetable that the train does not stop at Saphan Tham Krasae station, do you have any reliable information about that?

    • Yes, it stops there but it is a halt and not a station. Just let the conductor know. But everyone time I have been on the train it stops.

  • Hi Richard,
What I thought would be a simple exercise has been interesting journey to navigate the trains :), really enjoyed the commentary and all the comments above.

I do have a clarification question, if we get a driver to drop us at Kanchanaburi Station to take the 10:30am train through to Nam Tok Station (one way), where the driver will pick us up, can I pre book these tickets or do I just buy them on the day? If on the day is there a risk of not getting a ticket? If I can pre-book can you direct me to where I can do so please.

    • Tickets can only be bought on the day up to about an hour before departure. There are no reserved seats. So first come first served. If you are unlucky you will have to stand. Your driver can meet you at Nam Tok station. Best to go and visit the nearby Sai Yok Noi waterfall first as that is the true end of the line. Plus there is a steam locomotive on display there.

  • Hi, do you know if the train runs during songkran. We have mistakenly booked to be in Kanchanaburi during songkran 2025. I know hellfire pass and museums close but wondered if the train still run as we could do that on a day when the other things close. Also would it still run back to Bangkok for when we leave.? Many thanks have found out so much stuff from your

    • Yes, trains are running as normal but tourist trains will be cancelled. You shouldn’t have problems with local trains but long distance will be fully booked far in advance.

  • Hi sir,
i wanna ask about the death railway train:
    1. there are 2 types of trains. The first one is special train which departs from bangkok-namtok and it only operates on saturday & sunday. The second one is ordinary train which departs from thonburi-namtok and it operates daily. am i right?
    2. for the thonburi-namtok trip, do the trains stop for 30 minutes at river kwai bridge like the special train?

Thank you in advance for ur reply

    • The special tourist train only operates on weekends and public holidays. You must book this one in advance as it is popular. The regular daily one you can only buy the ticket at the station up to an hour before departure. This one only stops at stations for a minute or two. So if you want to get off at the bridge you need to wait for the next train. Unfortunately trains are not that frequent.

  • I am looking at travelling the death valley train next week.
Can I board a train at Kanchanaburi for the tour?

  • Dear Richard thanks in general for all very useful information, but I have another question:
I don’t understand if there is a difference between this train (normal one, runs also on Saturday/Sunday?) and the Excursion train (only on Saturday/ Sunday) at Thamkra Sae point: If I arrive to Say Yok I’ll have the same view at the Thamkra Sae or the Excursion Train make special stop for picture etc.
Then I can bring the Excursion One to go to Say Yok ad arrive at 11:30 and come back with the normal one at 13:00 (the 3 hours stop there I think are too much). For the ticket how can I do? Or another option is to stay only 55 minutes to Say Yok with the normal train, is it not enough to see the waterfall? What do you think?
And then Is it possible to across by foot the Kway bridge only with the Excursion Train or I’ll can do in every moment (excluded when train are scheduled).
The last question: on the officil website https://dticket.railway.co.th/DTicketPublicWeb/home/Home it’s impossible to book the Excursion train “DATA not Found” do you have any suggestion. For the normal one i can go there and catch it with out problem, I hope!

Thanks in advance for your reply
    Best regards Carlo

    • For the excursion train, you have to scroll down on the first page of the D=ticket website to where the tourist trains are. There’s a picture of a train going over Tham Krasae bridge. Click on that one. That stops at the River Kwai Bridge to take photos there. But it doesn’t stop at Tham Krasae. You could join the tourist train first and come back on the local train.

  • Hey thanks for the info. Any idea how can I book ticket from India in this train? I have registered in dticket SRT but whenever I search from and to it says no ticket available. Also are you aware of different classes in this train?

    • These ordinary trains from Thonburi station cannot be bought in advance online. You can only buy at the station an hour or so before departure.

  • Hi, does the train actually stop at the river kwai bridge station? As in the time table it is in italic fond. Many thanks for your reply – very helpful website

  • The late train back from Nam Tok finishe’s its journey at Nong Pla Duk Junction at 18.35, how do you get back to Thon Buri Stztion from there.

    • I haven’t confirmed yet, though I believe that train now terminates in Kanchanaburi. You either need to stay the night in Kanchanaburi or take a bus back to Bangkok.
