Exploring Between Sila At and Lamphun in Northern Thailand
These are my notes for exploring a section of the railway on the Northern Line between Sila At Station in Uttaradit and Lamphun Station, just south of Chiang Mai. On this map, I have divided it into three sections. Each section passes through the hills either over bridges or through tunnels. Section C is the one of most interest as it has three bridges with sheer drops, the longest railway tunnel at Khun Tan, and the scenic white bridge at Tha Chomphu.
In the above map, I have marked the times of arrival for three sleeper trains from Bangkok so you can choose the best one. The train passes through the hills just after Sila At Railway Station and comes out in the valley in Lamphun just south of Chiang Mai. As you can see, Express No. 51 is the best night train for scenery as it arrives in Northern Thailand just as the sun is rising.

- Kaeng Luang – after Den Chai station you will pass the Yom River on your right which is very scenic
- Ban Pin Railway Station – one of the most beautiful stations

This is the main section of interest as there are three bridges with sharp drops and good views, the longest tunnel, and the white Tha Chompu bridge.
