Secondhand Japanese Trains Bound for Thailand, Aim to Boost Commuter Service
Twenty pre-owned Japanese Kiha-40 and Kiha-48 train carriages are set to arrive in Thailand next month, marking a potential expansion for the country’s commuter rail network. The carriages will first undergo modifications to fit the Thai rail gauge, followed by refurbishment at the Makkasan facility.
The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) Governor revealed plans to deploy the refurbished trains on key commuter routes. This move follows the successful “feeder train” program that currently transports passengers from Nakhon Pathom to connect with Bangkok’s Red and Blue MRT lines.
“The success in Nakhon Pathom has inspired us to replicate the model. We envision similar feeder services connecting Ayutthaya and Chachoengsao to the capital,” the SRT Governor told Thai Train Guide.
Focus on Commuter Convenience
The SRT’s initiative aligns with growing commuter demand in areas surrounding Bangkok. This strategic acquisition of secondhand rolling stock indicates a potential cost-effective solution designed to ease congestion and improve the daily commutes of countless residents.
