Review of the Japanese JR-West Sleeper Train in Thailand
During the Songkran festival, demand for train tickets is very high. The State Railway of Thailand added three rounds of Special Express No. 5/6 between Bangkok and Chiang Mai, in addition to the three other sleeper trains already on this route. What makes Special Express No. 5/6 even more special, especially for railfans, is the use of the rarely seen JR-West Red Train. I was on Special Express No. 5/6 and this is my review of my experience.
The biggest difference between the JR-West sleeper carriage and other sleepers in Thailand is the orientation of the beds. They run across the carriage instead of along the sides. Each carriage has eight doorless cabins with four berths in each. There is a corridor along one side. This train consists of seven sleeper carriages and three seated carriages, as well as a separate power car.
