Sawankhalok Branch Line to reopen on 15th July 2023
The Sawankhalok Railway was built in 1908 to connect the city of Sawankhalok to the main railway line in the north. It is 29 kilometers long and was built by German engineers. The railway was originally 1.435 meters wide, but it was later changed to 1.00 meters to connect with the Southern Railway.
The railway was originally intended to go all the way to Tak, but it was never completed. However, it still served an important purpose by transporting sand from the Yom River for use in the construction of the Northern Railway. It also transported logs, forest products, and other goods.
The railway was also important for connecting people from Sawankhalok and nearby cities to Bangkok. In 2014, the railway was renovated and the sleepers were replaced with concrete sleepers. The rail was also changed to be 100 pounds along the way for stability.
The Sawankhalok Railway Line has always been open for service, but it was temporarily closed in April 2020 due to the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). The State Railway of Thailand will resume train services on this route on July 15, 2023, with a local train from Sila At to Sawankhalok – Sila At.
Can it be confirmed this did/has resumed please as my attempts to find the 2024 timings do not find any trains?
Yes it is still running. There has been no change to the timetable since I rode it last year.
